Last weekend, more than 1000 athletes fought and danced for medals at the European Cheerleading Championships in the Croatian capital of Zagreb.
Germany, with more than 500 participants, had not only the biggest squad, but also secured the most titles. In front of the enthusiastic spectators in the Školsko – športska dvorana Trnsko Hall, the German team secured no less than 18 gold medals. That meant that more than half of all championship titles and a total of 47 medals went to Germany. Great Britain follows with 10 gold and a total of 25 medals.
The “European Cheerleading Championships” (ECC) consist of the championship and an open championship in which teams who have not qualified for the national championships or are not members of the European Federation can participate. For example, many Croatian teams use the “ECC Open” to present themselves to an international audience and to be judged by an international jury.
For the first time this year there was also an age class “Masters” in the cheerdance categories, in which athletes older than 25 years can start. This means that there are now four age classes in which the teams from all over Europe can compete.
