In a triumphant comeback after a hiatus due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 11th Cheerleading World Championships were held on the 23rd-26th November 2023 at Takasaki Arena in Takasaki, Japan. The event featured over 100 teams from 18 countries and regions from around the globe.
Takasaki, a city known for its enthusiastic embrace of cheerleading, hosted the World Championships for the third time, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for cheerleading events.
Cheerleading fans from around the world filled the arena, eagerly cheering on their teams and revelling in the high-energy routines with teams pushing the boundaries of creativity and athleticism, leaving the spectators in awe of the talent on display.
Takasaki Arena, adorned with national flags and colourful team banners, provided the perfect backdrop for the dazzling performances that unfolded throughout the competition. Medals were awarded in several different competition divisions across four age categories: Junior 1 (age 7-12), Junior 2 (age 12-15), Senior (age 16+) and Masters (age 30+).
Host nation Japan showcased their skill and precision in the Cheerleading Team and Small Group divisions collecting multiple gold medals, with Thailand dominant in Cheer Dance and Urban Cheer Dance.
Germany collected gold medals in Cheerleading Doubles and Urban Cheer Dance Doubles Senior. Other gold medal winners were Chinese Taipei in Cheer Dance Doubles Masters and Lithuania secured their first ever gold medal at the World Championships in Cheer Dance Doubles Junior 2.
The event was also unique as it coincided with the 35th Japan National College Championships, creating an electrifying atmosphere as both international and national athletes showcased their prowess on the same stage. The combination of these two competitions added an extra layer of excitement, drawing an even larger audience to witness the thrilling performances.
With the vibrant success of this year’s championships, anticipation is already building for future editions of the World Championships.
